Martin Underwood Pain Coach photo

Hi, I’m Martin. I’m a Pain Management Coach and certified Alexander Technique Teacher. I specialise in providing immediate relief and long-term healing through tailored pain recovery plans, addressing pain from various angles - physical, emotional, and psychological - using the latest pain science and mind-body tools.

With over 10 years of experience practising various rehabilitation approaches, I focus on addressing the root cause of pain for lasting results.

I’m an expert in designing pain recovery plans for busy executives and office workers, elite performers (surgeons, athletes, and musicians), and the active retired. During my Alexander Technique teacher training, I specialised in posture-at-work. My expertise also includes mindset transformation to break the Stress-Tension-Pain Loop at its root.

I have 'walked the walk' myself, managing demanding work while in persistent pain - I know what it’s like and how to help you make change.

My Pain Story

Martin Pain Story - Rugby

My pain story can be summed up as too much sport, start-ups, and stress.

Injuries from playing semi-professional rugby, coupled with the high stress and long hours of working as a criminal law defense barrister, eventually transitioning into a start-up professional, left me with crippling back, neck, and shoulder pain.

Nothing seemed to work. Every treatment I tried failed. The pain persisted, but I refused to settle for merely managing it. Treating symptoms didn't feel like a solution. I was determined to identify and fix the root causes of my pain.

The Modern Pain Epidemic

The more I researched the more I realised I wasn’t alone in my pain. So many of us are struggling with a mix of injuries we’ve never rehabilitated, recurring wear and tear of repetitive day-to-day motions and sedentary lifestyles.

So many of us are sitting down for too long with all our injuries and issues, feeling under pressure and undermined - overwhelmed, overthinking, and overscheduling. It’s no wonder our bodies have started to collapse and become rigid or tense, causing dysfunction and pain.

Many of us don’t think of ourselves as athletes, but in truth, we are office athletes and it’s certainly an endurance sport. A sport we have no training for, and where most of the modern treatments focus on treating the symptoms of pain only, not understanding how our bodies came to equate movement - the most natural thing in the world - with discomfort and worse.

The missing piece of the pain puzzle

In my first Alexander Technique session, I was out of pain without knowing what had happened. I later met my primary Alexander Technique teacher who introduced me to a direct style that allowed me to feel in minutes the same way I felt at the end of a five-day movement retreat. Through it, every experience - breathing, seeing, balancing - became an opportunity to experience more time, space, ease - and a lot less pain. I went from being unable to sit with friends for a drink or hold down full-time work to moving with ease and freedom. I had found the missing piece of the puzzle of restoring healthy movement.

Mindfulness Applied to Movement = Pain-Free Movement

I describe the Alexander Technique to people as mindfulness applied to movement. It provides you with the tools to get the most from other approaches like physiotherapy, osteopathy, and pilates. Even day-to-day activities become an opportunity to practice moving with more comfort and ease, to remind your body that movement doesn’t need to mean discomfort.

Its impact on me was so transformative I knew I had to dedicate myself to training in the technique and helping others like me remember the pleasures of moving again.

Now I love to help people with demanding lives just like mine to live with more ease, freedom, and much less pain.
